Rooney proved United commitment, says Moyes

David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney showed his commitment to Manchester United with his display in Monday's 0-0 draw against Chelsea.

The unsettled striker has been the subject of two bids from Chelsea this summer, which United rejected, and made his first start for his club since April, against the same team.

But while Rooney, who has maintained his silence during a period of speculation, has not come out and publicly committed his future to United, manager Moyes believes his efforts on the Old Trafford pitch were eloquent enough.

"His performance said enough," Moyes said. "He closed two or three people down in the corner and the crowd recognised the work he did. He nearly scored with an overhead kick late on, so I think his actions tonight showed what he thought."

And Moyes feels a leaner Rooney is in the right frame of mind to carry on excelling for United and does not believe the forward was distracted by the uncertainty about his future.

Moyes admitted Rooney, who suffered hamstring and shoulder problems in pre-season, exceeded expectations by playing for the full 90 minutes.

He added: "I was very pleased with his performance and I was very pleased with the reaction from the crowd. I expected it. I don't know how many times I have to say it but he's been great in training. I think anyone looking at him might see a leaner-looking Wayne.

"I said to him: 'I might play you for only 60 or 70 minutes, see how you go.' But no, he tracked back, he tackled, he chased when we needed it. I think Wayne has a positive mind at the moment. I don't think it needs to change."
