Wayne Rooney seems set to stay at Manchester United after appearing to opt against submitting a transfer request.

Chelsea have had two bids for the England striker rejected and manager Jose Mourinho had said he was likely to return with a third offer.

But after the two clubs drew 0-0 at Old Trafford on Monday, Mourinho said it was up to Rooney to force the issue by publicly declaring he wanted to leave United and giving him a 48-hour deadline to act.

And it is understood that Rooney has instead chosen to remain at Old Trafford, bringing an end to a saga that has dominated the summer.

The 27-year-old was brought back into the United team for Monday's draw, making his first start for the club since April.

Manager David Moyes has been adamant that he won't sell Rooney and the United fans gave him a generous ovation, despite the possibility he would leave for one of their rivals.
