Mesut Ozil impressed against Stoke

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann believes Arsene Wenger ended up paying too much for playmaker Mesut Ozil because Real Madrid "lost the plot" in their pursuit of Gareth Bale.

Ozil joined Arsenal for a club-record £42.5m on transfer deadline day - half of the €100m Bale's transfer from Tottenham cost Real Madrid - and has become an instant hit at the Emirates, playing a role in all three goals in their 3-1 win against Stoke on Sunday.

But fellow German Lehmann, a member of Arsenal's unbeaten 2003-04 side, says Wenger was forced to pay over the odds for Ozil because Real had paid too much for Bale.

"In all honesty, Arsenal paid too much for Mesut Ozil," Lehmann told German sports website Spox.

"But that's because Gareth Bale went to Real Madrid for so much more money. Nobody is worth that much.

"The Ozil deal was much better. I don't see a €50m difference between the two players. That's how that market works when a club like Real Madrid loses the plot."
