Mourinho confident of making knockout stages

Jose Mourinho is confident of Chelsea's progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League after seeing his team brush Steaua Bucharest aside 4-0 in Romania.

Mourinho described the match as "must-win" before kick-off after Chelsea's shock opening defeat to Basel at Stamford Bridge, and his side did not disappoint him.

Ramires struck twice either side of an own goal from Daniel Georgievski, with Frank Lampard netting from long-range late on.

"I think we are going to qualify," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "Today's result is important because if we don't win we are under pressure.

"We have to control the situation and make points against Schalke and then beat Basel and Steaua.

"The result is very good. The points and the goals also. From the first minute it was very good. From the first minute we kept control of the game. We played good football with intelligence and maturity.

"We needed to clean what we did at home (against Basel) and we did it with a good result and performance. Now we are not in a dramatic situation, we are in a close situation."

Fernando Torres was forced off with a knee injury after just 11 minutes, with Mourinho hoping his striker has not suffered the same fate as Marco van Ginkel, who will miss the majority of the season with a knee problem.

"We have to wait for tomorrow for a scan," he said. "I hope it is not dramatic like Van Ginkel. I thought it was an ankle injury when he slid in. Hopefully it is not so dramatic."

Mourinho also welcomed the FA's decision not to retrospectively punish Torres after he was caught scratching the face of Jan Vertonghen in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Torres was later sent off after a challenge on Vertonghen, with Mourinho reiterating his accusation the Spurs defender dived.

"It doesn't surprise me," said Mourinho. "The FA represents English football and in England they never punish on emotion.

"They punish when you don't respect the integrity of game by simulating."
