Manuel Pellegrini is set to miss out on signing Victor Valdes as the Barcelona goalkeeper is expected to join French side Monaco, according to the Daily Mail.

Manchester City boss Pellegrini is keen to bolster his squad with a new goalkeeper in order to provide more competition to Joe Hart.

Hart has suffered poor form of late after making a number of high profile mistakes in both the Premier League and Champions League. Pellegrini, meanwhile, has preferred to choose Costel Pantilimon between the sticks.

Valdes is reportedly unsettled at Barcelona following a dispute over his contract and is considering a move away from the Camp Nou at the end of the season.

With several of Europe's elite clubs, including City, monitoring the Spain international, Monaco have emerged as the frontrunner to capture the 31-year-old's services.
