Ferdinand backs United title resurgence
Rio Ferdinand has dismissed claims Manchester United are already out of the title race, indicating no awards are given to a team that is top of the league in December.
Ferdinand is keen to secure qualification to the Champions League last 16 when United travel to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night.
With United trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by seven points, Ferdinand wants all distractions out of the way so the club can focus on reigniting their challenge for the title.
"Nothing is given out now so it doesn't matter what the table looks like now," Ferdinand told the Daily Mail. 'As long as you are within touching distance and we are, so long may it continue, and we will continue picking up points, build up momentum, and hopefully push our way up the table.
"We want to get it [Champions League last 16 qualification] done and over early so that we can get back into the Premier League and have nothing else distracting us. It would be nice if we could get it finished over there. It is not going to be easy but we are more them capable."
Following their European tie with Leverkusen, manager David Moyes takes his team to Tottenham on Sunday before United host Everton on December 4.
