Robin van Persie will play no part in Manchester United's crunch Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen after it was confirmed he has not flown with the squad to Germany.

The striker has been struggling with a persistent groin problem which ruled him out of United's 2-2 draw at Cardiff on Sunday, after he withdrew from the Netherlands' squad for their recent fixtures during the international break to rest it as well as a long-standing toe problem.

His last appearance came against former club Arsenal at Old Trafford, where he scored the only goal.

United boarded their flight at Manchester Airport this afternoon ahead of Wednesday's match at the BayArena. After missing training at the club's Carrington base on Tuesday, Van Persie now faces a struggle to be fit for United's trip to face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

"Robin isn't quite ready yet," said United boss David Moyes at his press conference after arriving in Germany. "It's not long-term, but we're going to keep monitoring him."

Nemanja Vidic was also left behind, having suffered a concussion in the win over Arsenal.

Phil Jones and Rafael handed Moyes a boost after both trained. However midfield is a concern for the United manager, with Michael Carrick injured and Marouane Fellaini ruled out due to suspension after picking up a red card against Real Sociedad.
