Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has hinted that the club are closing in on the appointment of former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

Inter are searching for a replacement for Jose Mourinho as a result of his decision to join Real and have identified Benitez as a prime target.

The Spaniard departed Liverpool by mutual consent on Thursday and Moratti praised his work over the weekend, describing Benitez as "very good".

It now appears as though an agreement could be close, with Moratti telling reporters: "The next few hours could be decisive. But we must ask (technical director Marco) Branca."

Benitez left Liverpool by mutual consent after a season in which the club finished a disappointing seventh in the league, failing to qualify for the Champions League.
