Former Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is ready to step back into the Anfield hot seat for the first time since 1991 after signalling his intent to withdraw from the selection panel set up to find a new manager, though Roy Hodgson is thought to remain top of the club's wanted list.

Along with managing director Christian Purslow, Dalglish has been part of the panel drawing up a shortlist of names to replace Rafael Benitez, but has reportedly been left so unimpressed by the options that he is ready to withdraw and put his own name forward.

Dalglish has been working as Liverpool's academy director since 2009 and would likely prove a popular appointment as he was the last manager to bring the league title to Anfield in 1990, having also enjoyed a distinguished playing career at the club.

But despite Dalgish's desire to return to the Anfield dugout, Fulham boss Hodgson is reportedly the overwhelming favourite to take the reins, with Liverpool ready to offer the Cottagers an attractive £2 million in compensation for a manager who is on a 12-month rolling contract.

Liverpool are seeking the all-clear from Fulham to launch an official approach for the 62-year-old, who has impressed with an unfashionable Cottagers side, leading them to the Europa League final last season.

The Anfield board are desperate for an experienced figure to help end what has been a tumultuous era of in-fighting and disagreement between the club's previous manager and hierarchy.

Hodgson may struggle to turn down an approach from one of the most successful clubs in English football history, but Dalglish is waiting in the wings should he reject Liverpool's offer.
