Webb gets World Cup referee nod

Howard Webb, the referee for the 2010 World Cup final, has been selected on FIFA's list of 25 officials for this year's tournament in Brazil.

Webb attracted attention for his performance in South Africa four years ago when he handed out a record 14 bookings during Spain's 1-0 victory over Netherlands, including one to Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong for his flying, studs up challenge on Xabi Alonso which many considered warranted a red card.

The Rotherham official - along with regular assistants Darren Cann and Michael Mullarkey - was selected ahead of his Premier League counterpart Mark Clattenburg to represent England at the 2014 finals.

Webb, who also took charge of that year's Champions League final, is joined on the list by the referee for last season's European showpiece, Italy's Nicola Rizzoli.

According to FIFA, referees were selected ''on their personality and their quality in football understanding by being able to read the game and the teams' tactical approaches towards each game.''

In all there are nine referees representing Europe, five from South America, four from Asia, three each from Africa and North America and one from Oceania selected for this year's tournament, which kicks off in Sao Paulo on June 12.

A further eight referees and eight assistants will go to Brazil as reserves.
