City set to increase Etihad capacity

Manchester City have been given the green light to extend the Etihad Stadium's capacity from 47,620 to 62,170.

City were hoping to add an extra 6,250 seats at both ends of their stadium, which they moved into in 2003, as well as a further 2,000 seats around the pitch.

The Manchester City Council's planning committee has approved the Premier League club's plan and, according to the Manchester Evening News, a decision will be made at a meeting on February 13.

City's plan states: "The expansion of the stadium will provide enhanced facilities which will help to create a stadium of national and international profile and improve the visitor experience.

"The appearance of the south and north stands will create a more prominent landmark feature at the centre of the Etihad Campus and East Manchester.

"The proposal will create job opportunities, some of which will be available for local residents and business, during the construction and operation of the expanded stadium."

If construction on the Etihad Stadium, which was built for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, goes ahead, it could mean the city of Manchester will have the Premier League's two biggest grounds, with Manchester United's Old Trafford currently holding 76,00.
