Arsenal could hijack Newcastle's Remy plans

Arsenal could thwart Newcastle United's chances of signing striker Loic Remy on a permanent basis, according to The Journal.

The paper claims Arsenal have made preliminary contact with Remy to source his future intentions, although it is understood Newcastle are keen to hold further talks over a possible £9 million move in the summer.

Remy is currently on-loan from Championship side QPR, but attention from Arsenal could prove to be a potential problem for Newcastle; Arsenal will likely have the added incentive of Champions League football, while Newcastle are only on course for a top ten finish in the Premier League.

Newcastle are keen to capture Remy on a permanent deal, as well as fellow loanee Luuk de Jong, with both Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse's futures at the club uncertain. Cisse has attracted interest from Russia, where the transfer deadline does not close until the end of February.

Newcastle attempted to instigate a deal for Remy ahead of January's transfer deadline, although it is thought the 27-year-old wants to wait until the end of the current campaign to assess his options.

Parent club QPR currently lie third in the Championship table, four points off an automatic promotion spot. Should Harry Redknapp's side be promoted back into the top-flight, it could prove a further stumbling block in Newcastle's plans to sign Remy full time.
