England manager Roy Hodgson will be trying to ensure his players do not follow in Wayne Rooney's footsteps by going on holiday to Las Vegas before the World Cup.

Rooney was criticised for making the trip to America before Euro 2012, with the break frowned upon as poor preparation.

The Manchester United striker, knowing he would miss the opening two matches through suspension, accepted the flak after he was pictured holding a beer.

But after the tournament he claimed he did not overdo things and went because he felt it was a good way to relax as he recovered from a toe problem.

Hodgson admitted that it will be difficult to monitor his players' off-field activities and is wary of putting down too many rules.

He said: "If I'm not careful, I will be treating all the players like children and telling them what they can and can't do in their spare time.

"But I certainly wouldn't encourage them to go that far away, no. My advice will be if you are going to go away with your family, keep it much closer to home and avoid the very, very long journeys.

"Whether or not I go as far as to say 'if you've booked a holiday to Las Vegas, then you can forget a place in my 23', I'm not sure I'll go that far."
