Shaw handed first England call-up but Barry misses out

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw has been called up by England for their friendly against Denmark next week, their last game before manager Roy Hodgson selects his provisional squad for this summer's World Cup finals.

Shaw, 18, has previously been a member of Gareth Southgate's U21 set-up this season. But after having impressed at St Mary's in recent years, the defender, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea, has been rewarded with a place in Hodgson's squad for the Wembley clash on March 5.

"Anyone who has watched him play would not deny he deserves a place," Hodgson said on Shaw's inclusion. "I think it was the right moment to invite him along with us. We are very well off in this potion but he wants to compete for a place on the plan to Brazil."

Striker Jermain Defoe - who is due to join MLS side Toronto FC imminently - has also been called up despite only featuring sporadically for Tottenham in recent weeks. Defoe's inclusion comes as a surprise with him bound for North America Hodgson has optedto keep faith in him.

Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have also been rewarded for their impressive form this term.

Henderson, who has won seven caps for England in the past, has regained his place in Brendan Rodgers' side after appearing to be surplus to requirements at one point, while Sterling has also forced his way back into the Liverpool's first XI with some exciting performances.

Elsewhere, Southampton trio Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez have been given another chance to impress by Hodgson, having all been given their international debuts by him earlier this season.

However, Hodgson pointed out this was not a definitive squad in mind for his 23-man team to take to Brazil for the World Cup and indicated that a lot could change between now and July.

"It would be very foolish of me in March to give a definitive 30 man squad [for the World Cup]," Hodgson said. This is the squad I have chosen for now. Andy Carroll has hardly played, Adam Johnson is a player we know and because of the competition we have decided not include him in this squad.

"It is our last game before we pick the 23. The option does exist to rest certain players and give others a chance. I have six subs and that gives me an option to divide games up. I don't think I will be thinking I have to put the best 11 out because I have chosen 30 I may have to do a bit of juggling.

"I am concerned there is a lot of football to be played. The period now is a very busy period. So many things can happen. I have chosen a strong 30-man squad, there are some others who could easily be added to that squad. I shall wait and see and maybe reassess on a weekly basis."

Celtic's Fraser Forster has been included after the goalkeeper broke the Scottish record for the longest amount of time without conceding a goal, while there is also a place for Cardiff centre-back Steven Caulker - although Hodgson admitted Caulker was not originally on his 30-man list and had been included because of the injury to Phil Jagielka.

"We asked Caulker to come in. He was not on the original in list because Jagielka was in and so too was Phil Jones until we found out he was out for a few more weeks," Hodgson said.

Ashley Cole, meanwhile, keeps his place in the squad despite being out of favour at Chelsea.
