United fans came in for praise from manager David Moyes for the way they stuck by their team during Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

And although United have lost six times at Old Trafford this season, the supporters are yet to turn on Moyes.

United meet Olympiakos on Wednesday, trailing 2-0 after the first leg in Greece and with striker Rooney convinced they need such fervent support again and adamant that they can progress to the quarter-finals.

Rooney had branded the Liverpool game "a nightmare" and "one of the worst days I've had in football".

He added: "Having said that the fans were brilliant right until the end under difficult circumstances so I would like to thank them for that.

"We need to move on as we have a big game on Wednesday. If the fans can repeat an atmosphere like Sunday, then we will have a good chance of going through. Thanks again for all your support."

Olympiakos wrapped up the Greek title on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Panthrakikos.
