United planning £200 million overhaul

Manchester United could splash out up to £200 million on new players this summer with David Moyes set to overhaul his under-performing squad, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Moyes' side are languishing in seventh place in the Premier League in a dismal first season under their new manager.

They remain 15 points off the top and 10 points off fourth-placed Arsenal with Champions League football unlikely at Old Trafford next season unless they win this year's competition. A daunting quarter-final first-leg against holders and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich is up next for United.

However United believe not playing in the Champions League could strengthen their title bid next season with the club aiming to win a fourth European Cup in the next five years.

United reportedly have £100 million to spend up front and another £100 million available for next year - with transfer deals usually only paid 50 percent up front.

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw is on United's radar with Moyes also targeting Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos, with the German club so far refusing to meet his wage demands.

Discussions have also been held with Sporting Lisbon over defensive midfielder William Carvalho, though United are unwilling to meet his £37 million buy-out clause, while Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan also remains a target.

United could also recoup a significant amount of money in transfer fees with the club set for an unprecedented clear-out in the summer.

Captain Nemanja Vidic has already agreed to join Inter Milan, while Shinji Kagawa, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Javier Hernandez, Nani, Anderson and Wilfried Zaha could also be on their way out.

Moyes' future at the club has been questioned following recent 3-0 home humiliations at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City, but he delivered a defiant riposte to his critics during United's 4-1 victory over Aston Villa.

While a planned protest from a group of fans to pay for a plane to fly over Old Trafford displaying a banner reading "Wrong One - Moyes Out" went ahead in the opening minutes, Moyes had walked out before either team on his way to the dugout and received a loud ovation from the United supporters in the ground.
