Following Tottenham's 5-1 hammering of relegation-stricken Sunderland on Monday, manager Tim Sherwood insisted his future in charge at White Hart Lane remained out of his hands.

Before the match, Spurs issued a statement saying Sherwood will face an end-of-season performance review. While the club insisted there was nothing sinister about the review, the statement failed to clarify Sherwood's future as manager.

Sherwood's situation looked even bleaker as he watched his side fall behind after a defensive horror gifted Lee Cattermole an early opener. However, a goal from Harry Kane on his Premier League debut and a double from Emmanuel Adebayor helped ease the pressure on their manager.

"I think the boys were fantastic," Sherwood told Sky Sports after the match. "It was a setback gifting Sunderland the goal and it was a poor error to give them the goal but I think we bounced back well to score and we controlled the game and dominated.

"It's five cup finals for me and who knows where that will take us, I look at my record here and it has been second-to-any manager that has been here under Daniel Levy.

"Any decision or questions regarding my employment you need to ask my employers, it's an honour to manage this football club and I'm honoured to do so."

Adebayor has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence under Sherwood's stewardship and, following his two goals against Sunderland, backed his manager to stay on.

"I keep saying it and no matter what happens to the manager I respect him, I'm very happy to be back on the pitch scoring goals," Adebayor said.

"He has been a big part of my life, when everyone forgot me he brought me back in and gave me my life back. I hope he stays but I am not the chairman, I just need to keep focussed on the job in hand and scoring goals."
