Sherwood offered Spurs demotion

Tottenham were hoping that Tim Sherwood would accept a demotion at the end of the season, it has emerged.

According to the Independent, Spurs will offer Sherwood the chance to return to his former role in charge of the club's youth development as technical coordinator when they appoint his successor this summer.

Sherwood will not be given the chance to see out the final 12 months of his 18-month contract, signed after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked in December, with the Spurs head coach facing a "job review" at the end of the season.

The club's chairman, Daniel Levy, and director of football, Franco Baldini, informed Sherwood he will not be kept on beyond the final game of the season at a meeting on Monday.

It is believed Louis van Gaal, the current Netherlands coach, is in pole position to take over at White Hart Lane.

Sherwood will reportedly turn down the offer to return to his former job, having also insisted last month he would "never want to be a No.2" to his successor at Spurs. He said: "I'd be no good as a No.2. I'm too opinionated. I wouldn't want to do the job."

But Levy is hoping to keep Sherwood on as head of the club's academy, where he had impressed since taking over as technical coordinator in 2009.

Harry Kane, Andros Townsend, Danny Rose and Milos Veljkovic - who all featured in Monday's 5-1 win over Sunderland - came through the ranks under Sherwood.

Spurs have also seen an increase in money from sales of players they have produced since Sherwood took over the academy, with Steven Caulker sold to Cardiff for £11 million and Jake Livermore expected to leave in the summer for a fee of around £8 million.
