Sunderland have swooped to sign defender Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield United.

The 26-year-old has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal and becomes Black Cats manager Steve Bruce's first signing of the January transfer window.

Kilgallon numbers Leeds, where he came through the youth ranks, and West Ham amongst his former clubs, but made his name at Bramall Lane. He has over 100 appearances under his belt for United and has played for England Under-21s.

Bruce claims to have beaten off competition from within the Premier League to sign Kilgallon.

"Matthew is a very talented defender and has been coveted by a number of top-flight clubs recently, so I'm very pleased to have brought him here," Bruce told Sunderland's official website. "He will add to our options across the back ahead of some very important games. I'm sure he'll prove to be a great signing for the club."
