Rio Ferdinand will not be granted his wish of staying at Manchester United next season, according to the Daily Mirror.

While working as a pundit during Sunday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, the defender told BT Sport that he planned to continue playing next season and hoped it would be at Old Trafford.

It is understood the club have an option to extend his contract by 12 months, but manager David Moyes is keen to completely revitalise his squad after a disappointing first season in his new role.

Ferdinand has suffered an indifferent season at United and has been in and out of the starting XI under new manager Moyes.

The defender and manager have seemed at odds at various points throughout the season and, with Ferdinand's United career seemingly coming to a close, he took a verbal swipe at the Scot in December. The 35-year-old also declared United's recent poor form had made it difficult for him to go about his daily life.
