Former AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri is not being lined up to be the next Tottenham head coach, sources at the north London club have told ESPN.

Allegri has been out of work since he was relieved of his duties at Milan in January, while he has previously expressed an interest in working in the Premier League.

Corriere dello Sport claimed on Friday that the Italian will "officially become the coach of Spurs."

However, sources at Tottenham have said the Italian is not in the running to replace Tim Sherwood - who is widely expected to leave in the summer - with no negotiations having taken place.

Allegri won the Serie A title with Milan in the 2010-11 season, but the former Cagliari coach saw his reputation tumble after a troubled 2013-14 campaign at the Rossoneri.

Louis van Gaal is still the bookmakers' favourite to take over at Tottenham, having confirmed that he will step down from his role as Netherlands coach after this summer's World Cup.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with the job at White Hart Lane.
