Wayne Rooney has apologised to England fans following their early exit from the World Cup - and is "absolutely devastated" to be heading out of the tournament.

After Italy were stunned 1-0 by Costa Rica on Friday, the result confirmed England's elimination from the World Cup with a game remaining after Roy Hodgson's side lost their first two group matches 2-1 to Italy and Uruguay.

"Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted," Rooney posted on his Facebook page.

England have exited the World Cup at the group stage for the first time since 1958, but Hodgson has insisted he will not resign and has been backed by the FA to remain as manager until his contract expires in 2016.

Rooney, who scored his maiden goal at the World Cup in the defeat to Uruguay, added: "Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out."
