Manchester City centre-back Martin Demichelis has intensified the rivalry with Manchester United after criticising Louis van Gaal for his exit from Bayern Munich in 2011.

Demichelis had a difficult relationship with Van Gaal, who had been appointed in the summer of 2009, and the pair clashed after the first match of the 2010-11 season when Demichelis was demoted to the bench.

Van Gaal subsequently decided Demichelis was surplus to requirements and offloaded him to Malaga during the winter transfer window, but the Dutchman, now in charge of United, was dismissed by Bayern just two months later.

Demichelis told German newspaper Bild he felt like "a son of the house" during his seven-and-a-half years with Bayern but added: "When Van Gaal came, it began to stink."

Having joined Bayern from River Plate in 2003, Demichelis went on to win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal four times apiece during his 259 competitive appearances for the club.

The 33-year-old played for Malaga until the end of the 2012-13 season. He joined Atletico Madrid that summer, but was sold on to City after only two months, having not worn the Atletico jersey once.

Demichelis could be reunited with Van Gaal when City and United meet at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on November 2.
