Luis Suarez scored a brace as 10-man Manchester City suffered a 2-1 defeat in the home leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona, although Lionel Messi failed to convert a last-minute penalty.

City had made a bright start, but before long the Barcelona attack was causing serious problems, and Suarez opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a fine finish after Vincent Kompany was unable to make a clearance.

With half an hour played, Barca were 2-0 up as Suarez connected with a Jordi Alba cross to divert the ball in off the far post as City struggled to get a grip on the game.

City were much improved in the second half, and they were rewarded in the 69th minute when Sergio Aguero latched on to David Silva's flick and fired home expertly.

However, their hopes receded significantly soon afterwards when Gael Clichy was shown a second yellow card, allowing Barca to take back control of the match.

It had appeared that Barca would extend their advantage in the final moments of the game when Pablo Zabaleta brought down Lionel Messi in the penalty area, but the Barcelona star saw his spot kick saved by Joe Hart and headed the rebound wide.
