Walter Smith reflects on a good draw for Rangers

Antonio Valencia was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg as Manchester United's Champions League campaign got off to a frustrating start with a disappointing 0-0 draw with Rangers at Old Trafford.

The 25-year-old midfielder collapsed in agony after an innocuous-looking challenge from Kirk Broadfoot around the hour mark.

Valencia was carried off the field and immediately taken to hospital but, considering replays of the incident were not shown on Sky Sports, the injury is thought to be very serious.

In truth, United, who welcomed Rio Ferdinand back into the side following his lengthy absence with a knee injury, did not deserve more than a point.

With Sunday's match with Liverpool looming large, Sir Alex Ferguson made 10 changes to the team that drew 3-3 at Everton on Saturday. But the sweeping changes appeared to leave the team fragmented and a toothless displayed followed.

Rangers rarely escaped their own half, allowing United to press forward but Walter Smith's side got men behind the ball and hung on to frustrate the home side.

Darron Gibson let fly with some long range efforts but a couple of his rasping drives were as close as United came to breaking the deadlock.

Worryingly for Ferguson, Wayne Rooney turned his ankle in the first half. However, the England striker continued and finished the game, though it remains to be seen whether he has sustained any damage.

Tottenham Hotspur began their first Champions League campaign with an encouraging 2-2 draw with Werder Bremen, but it could have been so much better for Harry Redknapp's men had they not squandered a two-goal lead.

Spurs began brightly and were rewarded for their fast start when Petri Pasanen slid in at the near post to divert the ball into his own net after some fine work by Gareth Bale down the left hand side.

Things got even better for the visitors as Peter Crouch escaped the attentions of Pasanen to power home a header to double their lead.

But after Spurs wasted chances to put the game to bed, Werder pulled a goal back through Hugo Almeida just before the break. And the comeback was completed when Marko Marin lashed home from twenty yards at the start of the second half.

The Spurs defence will not enjoy replays of that one after they backed off Marin - who needed no second invitation to crack a glorious strike past the despairing Carlo Cudicini. As if throwing a two-goal cushion away wasn't bad enough, new signing Rafael van der Vaart hobbled off with a calf strain.

Barcelona had a scare before putting five past a hapless Panathinaikos in Group D. Sidney Govou stunned Camp Nou to give the visitors the lead but after Lionel Messi had equalised the floodgates opened as Barca ran riot.

Defending champions Inter Milan had to settle for a point after drawing 2-2 with Dutch champions FC Twente in their Group A clash.
