Tottenham have opened talks with striker Roman Pavlyuchenko over a new contract, according to his agent.

Pavlyuchenko was close to leaving White Hart Lane for Birmingham last January but the clubs could not agree a fee. Since then he has scored a number of important goals as Spurs finished fourth last season and qualified for the Champions League.

The Russian has been linked with a return to his homeland but his recent form appears to have persuaded manager Harry Redknapp to try to prolong his stay in North London, even though the 28-year-old hasn't been able to hold down a regular starting place this season.

"Redknapp wouldn't sell Pavlyuchenko now,'' Artemov told Russian newspaper Sovetskiy Sport. "The same can be said of the chairman [Daniel] Levy.

"Three months ago, Levy suggested Roman sign a new contract on improved terms. We are in negotiations and discussing the details.''

Redknapp has already revealed Robbie Keane will be allowed to leave in January and Artemov added: "Keane will most likely be sold and maybe [Peter] Crouch. Roman isn't even considering the option of returning to Russia any more. He has changed greatly over two-and-a-half years in London and has a different perspective. If we extend the contract with Tottenham, Roman will probably never play again in the Russian championship.''
