David Moyes has confirmed Tottenham made an approach for Phil Neville before the start of the transfer window, but has ruled out the prospect of Everton's captain leaving the club.

Spurs have been linked with a host of players in recent days, David Beckham among them, and Neville's name cropped up on Tuesday. Harry Redknapp added fuel to the fire when confirming his admiration for the former Manchester United man.

Moyes has confirmed he fielded an enquiry from Redknapp, but revealed it was rebuffed.

"I spoke with Harry Redknapp briefly before the transfer window opened," Moyes told the club's official website. "Daniel Levy and Bill [Kenwright] had an even briefer conversation at our recent game against Spurs and mutually agreed that this would go no further.

"At no time was any offer made - nor would one have been welcomed. Phil Neville is our captain and is an important part of the Everton set-up."
