Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has admitted the club have made an offer for Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, but is unsure whether a deal will be reached.

Villa had previously been warned off the Scottish international by Blackpool manager Ian Holloway - who said clubs could "shove their bids wherever they like" - but Houllier confirmed that the club had made an approach for the 25-year-old and expressed optimism that discussions between the two clubs would eventually begin.

"We did things the right way. We went to the club and said we were interested in the player," Houllier said. "But there has not been any official reply except what I read from Ian Holloway. Everyone is entitled to say what they want.

"Will we be back in for him? It is difficult to say at the moment. He knows we want him, probably. But he has got a contract with his club so I can't say more about that."

Villa have also been heavily linked with the signing of midfielder Jean Makoun from Lyon. Houllier is confident a deal for the 27-year-old will be reached within the next few days but would not discuss the move at length until it is formally concluded.

"We have had some very positive talks with the club, with the player and his representative," Houllier said. "I hope to be able to say more soon but for the moment nothing is signed. But it is going on positively and he should have a medical in the next day or so. He can play as a holding midfielder or go box to box and it is an area where we don't have a lot of experience."
