Pascal Chimbonda is on the lookout for a new club after his contract was terminated by Blackburn.

The former Wigan defender is out of contract in the summer, but has been told he is surplus to requirements at Ewood Park and has left the club with immediate effect.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean confirmed Chimbonda had left the club.

"Pascal has left, he left yesterday [Thursday]," Kean said. "We came to an agreement by mutual consent, his contract is terminated, so we wish him all the best wherever he turns up."

The defender was placed on Rovers' transfer list by former manager Sam Allardyce, and Championship sides QPR and Ipswich Town are believed to be leading the race to sign the 31-year-old, and his agent Willie McKay is confident his client will find a new club.

"Pascal is looking for a new club and he has a number of options he is considering," McKay told skysports.com. "Pascal is disappointed at how things have ended up at Blackburn as he could have signed a long-term deal at West Ham in the last transfer window.

"Pascal is ready for a new challenge and he is prepared to sign a short-term deal until June to get back playing again. Pascal is a great free transfer as he can play anywhere across the back and has a wealth of experience having played in the Premier League for five seasons."

The former Tottenham defender has been linked with a reunion with former Wigan boss Paul Jewell at Ipswich, but although Jewell admitted he had made an enquiry for Chimbonda, he denied making a bid.

"I've made lots of phone calls and I've spoken to Steve Kean about a couple of things and Pascal's name did come up in conversation, but to see in the paper that we've bid £500,000 is complete nonsense," Jewell said.

"I just asked generally about what would be available. I've made lots of phone calls, as I've had lots of phone calls. I asked him what the situation is and he said he'd think about it. Whether Pascal Chimbonda is part of his plans, I don't 100% know. I'll leave that to Steve."
