Newcastle United have had a £10 million bid for Charles N'Zogbia rejected by Wigan Athletic, according to Sky Sports News.

N'Zogbia spent five years at the club between 2004 and 2009, eventually leaving under a cloud after being erroneously referred to as 'Charles Insomnia' by then-manager Joe Kinnear.

Newcastle United had hoped their bid would persuade Wigan - who paid £6m for the 24-year-old's services two years ago - to allow them to negotiate personal terms with the player, but it was rejected by the Latics hierarchy.

N'Zogbia will have a new striker to deliver the ball in to, as Wigan have confirmed the capture of Connor Sammon from Kilmarnock.

Sammon put his name to a three-and-a-half-year deal after Wigan agreed an undisclosed fee with the SPL side.
