Andy Carroll has stunned Newcastle by handing in a transfer request, which the club have reluctantly accepted - paving the way for the striker to join Liverpool.

Liverpool had a bid of £30 million rejected by the Magpies on Monday morning, but it clearly turned Carroll's head as the striker informed the club of his desire to move.

With a huge offer winging its way to Tyneside, Newcastle have accepted Carroll's request and this has allowed him to travel to Liverpool and discuss terms.

"Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll," a statement read. "The club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical."

Liverpool have not disclosed the size of the fee, believed to be in excess of £35m, while Newcastle have only revealed it is a "British record transfer". The current record for a British transfer is Robinho's £32.5m move to Manchester City.

Carroll is currently nursing a thigh injury, but he is set to undergo a medical before finalising a move to Anfield.
