Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones is having a medical at Manchester United ahead of a £16 million transfer, according to reports.

Jones, 19, made 24 Premier League starts for Blackburn last season, impressing with his performances in both defence and midfield.

He missed the early months of 2011 after suffering a torn cartilage in his right knee, but came back to finish the campaign strongly as Rovers avoided relegation.

Jones extended his Blackburn contract in February, penning a one-year extension that committed him to the Ewood Park club until 2016, but it seems United's offer has been too much for Rovers to ignore.

He is currently with the England Under-21 squad ahead of this month's European Championships, where he is joined by United prospects Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck.

United are expected to shell out a similar fee on Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea, as Sir Alex Ferguson focuses on building a younger team following the retirement of Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar and Gary Neville last season.
