Redknapp scoffs at Chelsea's 'farcical' bid for Modric
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has described Chelsea's offer for Luka Modric as "ridiculous" and has warned the Blues that they would face intense competition if they made the Croatian midfielder available.
Chelsea offered £22 million for the playmaker earlier in the summer, but the bid was rejected by Spurs.
Tottenham have maintained that they will not entertain any offer for Modric, with Redknapp insisting the club will not put a price on his head.
"I was surprised by the figure, it's a farcical bid," Redknapp told Sky Sports News. "If you are going to make an offer, make an offer. £22 million for Luka Modric is ridiculous. We would not put a valuation on him.
"He is such a fantastic player. We do not want to sell him, he is up there with the very best. I think he can play in any team in the world, he is that good.
"It is not only Chelsea that would want him. There are two or three other clubs who would want him and start bidding for him if we made him available. We don't want to lose him, we want to improve the team and not decimate it by selling such a fantastic player.
"It is difficult if a club comes along and wants to double or treble his wage, it is difficult. I am not going to say we could pay the wages Chelsea or Manchester United or Manchester City could offer him, but we could show the ambition. We have a great group of players and if we can add a couple to that group then we can achieve anything at Tottenham.
"I want to win the championship with Tottenham. That is my ambition and it is not impossible, but we have got to push on.
"I have to shift some fringe players, I know that, but we have to improve if we want to push on into that top four.
"Daniel [Levy, chairman] runs a tight ship, he runs the club fantastically, and we are not going to put ourselves in trouble through spending money we have not got. But if can find one or two players and improve the team, then we have to do that."
