Lancaster adds to British success at Silverstone

Jon Lancaster made it two British victories from two GP2 races at the British Grand Prix when he dominated the sprint race to win by over six seconds on Sunday.

Lancaster made a lightning fast start from fourth on the grid and squeezed between Rio Haryanto and the pit wall to take the lead as Julian Leal, who had started from pole position, bogged down. Haryanto held second as James Calado also made a brilliant start from eighth to take the inside line into the first corner and then Village to muscle his way up to third. Leal dropped to fourth and the top four held those positions until the chequered flag 21 laps later.

Saturday's star man Sam Bird worked his way from seventh on the grid to fifth with another impressive drive while his team-mate Tom Dillmann just held off Felipe Nasr in the final two corners to take sixth. The battle between Dillmann and Nasr had been brewing for a few laps as the Carlin driver made his way back through the field, picking off Marcus Ericsson with brakes locked into Brooklands. However, when it came to trying to making a move stick at Vale and Club he was outfoxed by Dillmann and crossed the line 0.1s behind the Russian Time car.

Ericsson took the final points paying position in eighth but had to hold off pressure from Alexander Rossi in the closing stages, who had a strong race after starting 20th. Stefano Coletti rounded out the top ten in a weekend where his championship lead took a battering with zero points.

Jolyon Palmer had his hopes of a strong result in front of his home crowd scuppered through no fault of his own. After starting third he was punted wide by Stephane Richelmi in the first corner and during his fightback was taken out of the race by Sergio Canamasas, who refused to yield into Brooklands despite being a lap down. Canamasas was given a stop/go penalty as a result.
