Amateur jockey JT McNamara was airlifted to hospital on Thursday, after suffering a 'serious neck injury' at the Cheltenham Festival.

McNamara, 37, was rushed to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol after falling from Galaxy Rock during the 4.40pm Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase at the racecourse.

Racing was delayed for around 30 minutes while doctors attended to the Irishman, who was put into a medically-induced coma before being transported by air ambulance.

"He has been put in an induced coma and airlifted to the regional spine unit where he will be scanned," Dr Adrian McGoldrick, chief medical officer for the Irish Turf Club, told the Racing Post.

McGoldrick subsequently added: "He has a serious neck injury and we're awaiting results of further tests and scans."
