Narain Karthikeyan's main aim in 2011 is to finish races as HRT plans to start the season with an updated version of its 2010 car.

The Dallara chassis proved uncompetitive last year and failed to finish on 13 occasions. However, in 2011 it will have a completely new aero package as well as a new gearbox and hydraulics system from Williams, which should improve reliability.

Nevertheless, Karthikeyan is still keen to play down expectations and take his return to Formula One one step at a time.

"The team and I are under no illusions, and don't expect any miracles in 2011," he said in an interview with ESPNF1. "The team at HRT is working flat-out to ensure that the cars will be ready for the first tests in February. We want to be as reliable as possible, finish as many races as we can, and then we will be moving in a positive direction."

However, Karthikeyan reckons there will be a noticeable improvement in the car's pace and is confident technical director Geoff Willis is the man to deliver a quicker package.

"For 2011, HRT has established strong technical partnerships. It will have an upgraded version of its 2010 chassis, mated to Cosworth engine and a gearbox from Williams F1. They have also hired designer Geoff Willis, who has plenty of experience in F1. This combination will definitely make for an improved package."

The details of Karthikeyan's deal have not been made public, although he comes with backing from Indian car manufacturer Tata and is paying for his drive next season.

In 2010 HRT dropped Karun Chandhok after the British Grand Prix and at the remaining races alternated between Sakon Yamamoto and Christian Klien. However, Karthikeyan does not expect to be the victim of the same ruthless management style next year.

"I cannot comment on HRT's contracts with its other drivers," he said. "I am confident that I will be driving in F1 for the 2011 racing season."
