Bernie Ecclestone has said Formula One would be better off with 10 teams as the grid looks set to be reduced to 11 in 2013.

HRT was not named on the FIA's official entry list for next season and looks set to fold unless it can find a buyer. One of its suppliers - Formtech Industries - claimed earlier this week that liquidation procedures started at HRT on November 12 and that it is no longer in a position to pay 100% of its outstanding invoices.

But Ecclestone said he is not concerned that F1 will likely have a smaller grid in 2013.

"I'd rather have 10," he told Reuters. "I never wanted 12. It's just that 10 is easier to handle, for the promoters, for transport. We'd rather have 10...so long as we don't lose Ferrari."

HRT was one of three teams that joined the sport in 2010 as part of an FIA initiative to attract new entrants after several manufacturer teams pulled out at the end of 2009. It has failed to score a point in its three years - as have fellow newcomers Caterham and Marussia - and also failed to qualify for the opening round of this year's championship.

Asked if he thought someone might buy HRT, Ecclestone added: "I wouldn't think that anyone would want to."
