Counties Manukau coach Tana Umaga has been told to explain an exchange he had with match officials, after the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) initiated a misconduct process.

The NZRU says the process follows a discussion Umaga allegedly had with officials after the Steelers' 22-20 loss to Auckland at Eden Park last Wednesday.

The misconduct process will also consider post-match comments that the former All Blacks captain made to media. NZRU professional rugby general manager Neil Sorensen says the first step is to hold a meeting with Umaga and his representatives once all parties can agree on a date.

He says there will be no further comment until the process is completed.

"It's pretty important that we let Tana and others involved have a fair opportunity to make their submissions," he said.

Speaking to journalists after the match, Umaga was highly critical of referee Glen Jackson's performance.

Counties Manukau's next fixture is their Ranfurly Shield defence against Taranaki on Sunday.
