McLaren has confirmed it has agreed a deal for Red Bull's Peter Prodromou to join its team in the future, but says it is just one of several key changes to its team ahead of its shift to Honda engines in 2015.

The Red Bull head of aerodynamics is expected to join McLaren in 2015 once he has completed the necessary 'gardening leave' as part of his current contract. However, McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale said there were other changes to be made to the team before Prodromou joins.

"In terms of our position, yes we have recruited Peter, we're really excited about him joining the team but it's not a one off thing that we are doing, there are other things we are doing to strengthen our team," he said. "It's a series of moves as we head towards 2015 with Honda to make sure this team stays at the forefront of Formula One and in winning ways. We don't intend to hang around here [at the current performance level] for very long. We've quietly been strengthening the team through this year as well and sorting ourselves out internally.

"As you'd expect in our organisation, there is a pipe line of things coming through and I would say the one that has broken in the press today is the furthest away. There is a lot more that is happening in the short term."

Prodromou has worked for McLaren before and joined originally in 1991 when the team was in the penultimate year of its previous Honda engine deal. But Neale said the return of the Japanese car giant had not been directly linked to his signing.

"Honda is important for a whole number of reasons, which we've talked about outside of this. But that wasn't the clincher. I've worked with Peter before, during his last tour of duty here, he's a great guy and very competitive. But no one person makes a team, it's how they fit in and how we play to their strengths and it's who else we put around them.

"I'm very confident Peter can make a good contribution, but I'm very confident as well that the guys that we have internally and some of the developments that we have are equally as exciting and it will play as a good squad."
