Mark Webber was satisfied he improved on his Melbourne qualifying performance in Malaysia even though he was beaten to the front row of the grid by team-mate Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
Webber had a tough weekend in Australia which was partly explained by a damper problem. But after putting his car on the third row at Sepang he said he had also found time from his own performance, which he hopes to replicate in Sunday's race.
"It was a better performance from me today compared to Melbourne and I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I'm starting on the clean side of the grid and it should be an interesting race - I think there will be a lot of pit stops."
After qualifying team principal Christian Horner told the BBC Red Bull was running KERS on both cars but that Webber "had a little KERS alarm that we're looking at".
Webber added that Red Bull had been expecting a tight fight with McLaren all weekend so it was no surprise to see the top four separated by less than 0.4 seconds.
"I knew it would be very tight; everyone was on a single pace after the first flying lap on the option tyre in Q3," he said. "It was pretty straight forward for us; you have to just drive as quick as you can when it's like that. We can't control how tight it is, to get a few tenths more you have to just do your best."
