Timo Glock has cited Marussia's failure to secure 10th place in the 2012 constructors' championship as the reason he had to leave the team.

Marussia was 10th going in to the final race of the season thanks to Glock's 12th place in Singapore, but Vitaly Petrov finished 11th for Caterham in Brazil to snatch back the crucial place in the constructors' standings. Glock left Marussia by mutual consent last week, and he admits the lost prize money for its final championship position had a large bearing on his departure.

"After the last race in Brazil, I had pain, because we had really counted on being able to keep the tenth place," Glock told Speed-Academy. "It looked good for a long time.

"The team came up to me and described the situation very clearly and openly. I made my thoughts about it known and eventually we sat down together and went through are certain possibilities. I then realised that the economic situation at the moment for the team is difficult and therefore it will be difficult to make the expected step forward.

"We had a good base and I also believe that the new car will be a step forward. But still, I know what it takes to make the big step. And I think the fact that we missed out on the tenth place, the really big step will not occur and that is why I've been thinking about my future."

Glock would also not rule out a return to Formula One in the near future, but insisted his main focus was on being successful in DTM this year having signed to race for BMW.

"Everything remains to be seen what happens in the future. I'm always open, but at the moment I am concentrating fully on the BMW commitment and do not think about what might happen in 2014 or 2015. Right now I am focusing all my concentration at BMW."
