Jenson Button insists Martin Whitmarsh is the right leader for McLaren as the team continues to endure a poor season.

McLaren failed to score a point in Canada - bringing an end to a run of 64 consecutive point-scoring finishes - and that was despite both cars finishing the race. After the race Button said he had "never been so pleased to get out of a car", but despite McLaren having yet to finish higher than fifth this season and not showing signs of recovery Button has given Whitmarsh his full backing.

"As far as I know everyone's united, yes," Button told Sky Sports News. "I think Martin is a really good leader and he's a proper human being as well; he's a guy that you can trust and you can believe in. I feel that everyone at the factory - all the people I speak to when I'm there - feel exactly the same.

"It's so difficult for a team principal when a team that normally wins grands prix suddenly isn't winning grands prix. It's tough but I think he is the best leader to bring us through this difficult time."

Looking ahead to the British Grand Prix next weekend Button said he is hoping the recent troubles will give way to a better weekend for McLaren.

"It's a team that's used to winning grands prix, it's used to fighting for world championships and that's why this year has been so difficult for us and mentally very, very tough. But they say that makes you stronger and that's exactly what we're hoping it does. So we are working our hardest to get a result here at the British Grand Prix. A win is looking very tough for us but we will do the best we can and hopefully put on a great show for all the fans."
