Lewis Hamilton is confident McLaren will catch Formula One's pacesetters Red Bull at some point this season.

Red Bull has been on pole at every race this year and has gone on to win three of the first six grands prix. Hamilton is 19 points adrift of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber at the top of the championship but said the situation could have been a whole lot worse.

"If they had also won every race they would be miles ahead by now," Hamilton told reporters. "They would have so many points, so for us it's quite good at the moment to see we've got a chance. They have been so quick. They didn't even push in this race [Monaco], they weren't even pushing. It's not scary, it just takes the mickey a little bit. They were just not pushing at all really. It was a bit too easy for them...but I know that we will catch up at some stage and then we will be racing with them and they won't be having such easy races."

However, his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button warned it would take a number of races to close the gap and in the meantime Red Bull would likely push home its advantage.

"At the moment you would say the Red Bull is the most competitive car," Button said. "We have to try our best to take points off them because if they are reliable, consistent and don't make mistakes then over the next few races they are going to be very difficult to beat."
