Eric Boullier says McLaren would need six months to enter a third car for the first race of 2015, less time than there is until the Australian Grand Prix next season.

The prospect of three-car teams has become a pressing issue in F1 with the possibility of one or more teams folding over the winter, with regulations stating other teams have to step in with another car if grid numbers fall below 20. Though nothing has been confirmed and discussions are still ongoing Boullier thinks it will not be a simple task to get everything in place for a third car.

"The driver is the easiest to get on board, you know" Boullier told journalists including ESPN at a McLaren phone-in. "The chassis and the logistics of the third car, the people around it, we would need about six months' notice."

The Australian Grand Prix takes place on March 15 which, at the time of the McLaren phone-in, was five months and 18 days away.

When Boullier was asked about Force India boss Vijay Mallya's comments F1 should distribute revenues more fairly to aid smaller teams, he said: "Well he's not really in favour of this and I can understand why.

"I think it's a debate which is in the wrong timing - there is a meeting to run three cars, and then we will see. We can ask questions, many things, about revenue, about whatever. But I think at the end of it, one day if we are called and asked to help F1 by running three cars then we have to."
