Hamilton expects hard bargain over new contract

Lewis Hamilton is expecting his McLaren team to drive a hard bargain over extending his contract beyond the end of this year.

After the Canadian Grand Prix, McLaren chairman Ron Dennis said that Hamilton's current contract was "signed at a time when the economy was somewhat different and now there has to be a balance between that". The implication was that a new contract might not be as lucrative as the driver's management might have hoped, but Hamilton said he is expecting Dennis to drive a hard bargain.

"Ron is a very tough negotiator. He was very tough when they negotiated the contract I have now and I expect him to be the same when we go back in now. I don't see there being many problems to be honest."

Hamilton said he was hoping to have a contract signed before the end of the season, but that there was no need to rush in to it.

"I'm really not bothered at the moment," he told Sky Sports News. "I'm happy and proud to still be a part of this team, to have the success that we have and work with the guys that I'm with. I'm really just excited about the next step, but that can come in time. Things will fall into place when they need to."
