McLaren's development will remain 'aggressive'

McLaren has vowed to remain aggressive with its development strategy this year, despite what appeared to be a setback at the British Grand Prix.

McLaren had hoped an upgrade at Silverstone would mean drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button would be competitive at their home race, but after most of practice and qualifying was rained off the car failed to perform in the dry race. The team is bringing another batch of upgrades to the German Grand Prix next weekend and team principal Martin Whitmarsh said McLaren's approach has not changed.

"Of course, after Silverstone, our focus immediately turned to Hockenheim, which, along with the Hungaroring in Budapest, will bring the curtain down on the first half of the season at the end of the month," he said. "There is a huge resolve within the operation to ensure that our aggressive development strategy is upheld across the summer: we are determined to narrow the gap to the championship leaders before the start of the summer break.

Whitmarsh also thanked the support the team received at its home race despite its struggle.

"Silverstone was a difficult weekend for us - made better by observing at close-hand the depth of loyal support all around the circuit for Jenson, Lewis and the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team. Indeed, it was extremely heartening that, even after what was a disappointing result, their enthusiasm and support remained undimmed. They are a constant motivation for me, and for everybody at McLaren."
