Mercedes principal Ross Brawn's future with the team is again in doubt after the departure of Paddy Lowe from McLaren at the end of the season again fuelled reports Lowe would join the team at the end of the season.

Brawn indicated last month that he would leave if Lowe was recruited and given that the new man is likely to be running the team day-to-day alongside executive director Toto Wolff in 2014, Brawn's position would seem to be untenable.

Although a formal announcement has yet to be made, Lowe is widely believed to be joining Mercedes at the end of the season when he has served out his remaining contract with McLaren.

Niki Lauda, the team's non-executive chairman, refused to be drawn. "I cannot officially say anything because nothing has happened yet," he said on Monday night. "If Paddy Lowe is coming or not, I cannot tell you now. Make up your own [mind], whatever you want to do. The situation is as it is. McLaren have put him on gardening leave, so let's wait and see.

"To be clear, Ross has not even been discussed, which is an important thing. But there's peace. Ross is in his position, he will stay in his position, so everything is under control, there is nothing to make out of this."
