Mercedes is hoping to have its own McLaren-style F-duct working on its car in time for the Spanish Grand Prix in May, according to the team's motorsport boss Norbert Haug.
The aerodynamic device is controlled by the driver and can increase the car's top speed by stalling the rear wing and cutting drag. Sauber tested but did not race a version in Australia and Williams' Sam Michael said his team aims to be ready with its own solution in China next month.
After Lewis Hamilton exploited his straight-line speed advantage over Nico Rosberg to pass the Mercedes driver around the outside of turn 11 at the Australia Grand Prix, Haug said his team is planning to introduce an F-duct in time for the European season.
"There are several teams working on it, and so are we," he said. "Maybe we will take it to the race on 9 May in Barcelona."
Renault has ruled out designing an F-duct, but it is believed that Ferrari, Force India and Red Bull are all working on their own designs.
