Lewis Hamilton says this season is the first time he has "really, really wanted it" when fighting for position in the constructors' championship.

Mercedes is currently third in the standings, 10 points behind Ferrari and 23 ahead of Lotus with four races remaining. With his own drivers' championship hopes having officially ended in Japan, Hamilton said he was highly motivated by the battle for second place in the constructors' even if it's not the type of target he wants to be aiming for consistently.

"It's quite cool; it's one of the first times that I've really, really wanted it more because we have a chance of second," Hamilton said. "Third, fourth and fifth is different but we have a chance to be the second best team. It's a real challenge and I'm excited about it because I don't really particularly care now about which position as a driver I finish. It doesn't really make a difference, unless you're first or second; third, fourth, fifth, sixth doesn't really look great.

"So the constructors' championship is really what I can add to. I want to win world championships, I don't want to win second places."

Hamilton believes Mercedes has the pace to secure second place but says it needs to get the most out of its car more consistently.

"Lotus has really made a big step over the last few races and Ferrari has taken another step, so they're very strong competitors. Ferrari has pulled a 10-point lead on us, but it's not impossible for us to continue fighting with them. We just need a good weekend; we've definitely got a better car than our results have shown, so we really need to try to put it together these next four races, which I feel we can."
