Michael Schumacher took the first steps towards his comeback to Formula One on Monday when he completed 40 laps in the Mercedes MGP W01.

Despite the seven-time champion claiming he no longer suffers from the neck injury he sustained in a motorcycle crash, he was not taking any chances and had both his physiotherapist and personal doctor on hand.

Both Doctor Johannes Peil and physiotherapist Kai Schnapka are staying with him at the circuit in his motor home during the test. When asked about the injury Peil said : "I'm superstitious, so we wait and see."

Despite concerns about his health, Schumacher put in a strong performance on Monday finishing third in the tables. He recorded a time of 1:12.947 ahead of his team-mate Nico Rosberg who struggled with a bad driving position. Rosberg will be at the wheel for both sessions at Circuit Ricardo Tormo today with Schumacher set to return on Wednesday.
